About The Role
We announced Cloudflare Workers in 2017 — since then it’s played a key role in Cloudflare’s strategy for entering the compute market. Until the launch of Workers, as Cloudflare was ramping up its capabilities in the performance and security spaces, it became clear that developers needed more ways to control the edge than rules engines could support.
Workers has grown from a simple functions-as-a-service option into a complete full-stack platform — and with this comes the need to support a broader set of Runtime APIs. This spans a wide range, from TC39 standards, to Node.js APIs, to web standards. We played a key role in forming WinterCG, and there’s still much work to do to grow a shared base of APIs across runtimes — to push forward the ecosystem and ease the burden on open-source maintainers of supporting multiple runtimes.
