Data Analyst resume example: what to show and how to write it

A data analyst turns raw data into answers a business can act on. The hiring reader wants proof that your analysis changed a decision, not just that you can write a query.

What a data analyst resume has to show

  • The question you answered and the decision it informed
  • The tools you used for each task: SQL dialect, spreadsheet, BI platform, scripting language
  • The size and messiness of the data you handled
  • Who consumed your work, such as an executive team, a product group or a regional manager

Data Analyst resume summary example

Illustrative example. Replace every bracketed item with your own facts.

Analyst with [X] years in retail and e-commerce reporting, strongest in SQL and dashboard design. Built the weekly trading view used by [X] regional managers and replaced [X] manual spreadsheet reports. Comfortable taking a vague question from a stakeholder to a clear recommendation.

Experience bullets that carry results

Illustrative example. [X] marks a number only you can supply; do not publish a figure you cannot support.

  • Analysed [X] months of order data to find that [X]% of returns came from one supplier, prompting a review that cut return rates by [X]%.
  • Built a dashboard in [BI tool] replacing [X] hours of weekly manual reporting for a team of [X].
  • Wrote SQL to join [X] source systems into a single customer table, resolving a mismatch that had inflated reported revenue by [X]%.
  • Presented findings to a leadership group of [X], leading to a change in how promotions were scheduled.

Skills for a data analyst resume

Hard skills

  • SQL
  • Spreadsheet modelling
  • A BI tool such as Tableau, Power BI or Looker
  • Python or R for analysis
  • Data cleaning and validation

Soft skills

  • Translating a business question into an analysis
  • Presenting to non-technical readers
  • Skepticism about data quality
  • Prioritising requests

Show soft skills through a bullet that proves them rather than as a list of adjectives.

Common data analyst resume mistakes

  • Naming tools with no result ("used Tableau") instead of the decision the dashboard supported
  • Reporting accuracy or time saved with no baseline
  • Skipping the business context, so the reader cannot tell whether the data was large or small
  • Listing "data analysis" as a skill rather than showing a specific analysis

ATS and keyword guidance

Job posts for analysts are tool-heavy, so mirror the exact names ("Power BI", "Snowflake", "A/B testing") where they are true and place them in bullets as well as the skills list. The analyzer's job match will show which tools and skills in a posting your resume does not mention.

To see which of a posting's skills your resume is missing, run it through the ATS resume checker.

Frequently Asked Questions

It helps, especially early in your career. One or two projects that start with a question, show the method and end with a conclusion are more persuasive than a gallery of charts.

Read the posting. Most analyst roles expect SQL; the BI tool varies by employer. Put the ones the posting names first, and only those you can use.

Lead with a project or coursework that used real data, state the question and what you found, and add the tools. Internships, volunteer reporting and competitions all count if you describe the analysis.
