Software Engineer resume example: what to show and how to write it
A software engineer designs, builds and maintains the code behind a product. Whoever reads the resume is usually an engineer or a recruiter working from an engineer's checklist, so scope and technology matter more than adjectives.

What a software engineer resume has to show
- The stack you actually shipped in, named per role rather than in one undifferentiated list
- The scale of what you worked on: users, requests, data volume, team size, or deployment frequency
- Ownership: what you designed or led versus what you contributed to
- Outcomes in product or reliability terms, not just that a feature "was implemented"
Software Engineer resume summary example
Illustrative example. Replace every bracketed item with your own facts.
Backend engineer with [X] years building and operating payment and ordering services in Go and PostgreSQL. Led the move from a monolith to [X] services at a team of [X] engineers, and own on-call for the checkout path. Looking for a platform role where reliability work is first-class.
Experience bullets that carry results
Illustrative example. [X] marks a number only you can supply; do not publish a figure you cannot support.
- Redesigned the order-confirmation service around an event queue, cutting p95 latency from [X] ms to [X] ms for [X] daily orders.
- Led a [X]-person effort to replace a hand-rolled deploy script with a CI pipeline, reducing release time from [X] hours to [X] minutes.
- Found and fixed a connection-pool leak behind recurring incidents, lowering paging alerts by [X]% over [X] months.
- Mentored [X] junior engineers through code review and a design-doc template the team still uses.
Skills for a software engineer resume
Hard skills
- Languages you ship in (for example Go, Python, TypeScript, Java)
- Databases and queues
- Cloud and CI/CD tooling
- Testing and observability
- System design
Soft skills
- Written design communication
- Code review
- Cross-team collaboration
- Estimating and scoping
Show soft skills through a bullet that proves them rather than as a list of adjectives.
Common software engineer resume mistakes
- Listing every language you have touched, with no sign of depth in any
- Describing tasks ("worked on the API") with no scale or result
- Leaving out the project section when you have little professional history; side projects with real users count
- Burying the stack in a skills box that a parser or a reader cannot tie to a job
ATS and keyword guidance
Use the exact names in the posting for languages, frameworks and cloud services ("PostgreSQL", not just "SQL databases"), and keep them in plain text both in your skills section and inside the bullets where you used them. A bullet that uses a keyword in context carries more than the same word in a list.
To see which of a posting's skills your resume is missing, run it through the ATS resume checker.
