Accountant mock interview

Accountant interviews look for a clean close: what you reconcile, what you do with a break, and how you meet a deadline without skipping the check that matters.

Talk about one account you owned. Name the source, the reconciliation, and a break you explained.

10 accountant interview questions and model answers

  1. Technical

    1. Walk through a reconciliation you own.

What they are testing: Core skill.

I tie the subledger to the general ledger, list reconciling items with age, and clear items that should not survive the month. I keep the support where the reviewer can open it. A balance that matches with no support is not finished.

  2. Situational

    2. The close deadline is today and one account does not tie. What do you do?

What they are testing: Judgment under time.

I quantify the break. If it is above the threshold I escalate and I do not post a plug. If it is immaterial and explained, I document it and propose the post-close fix. I say which of those it is.

  3. Domain

    3. What belongs in your close checklist?

    What they are testing: Process.

The tasks, the owner, the dependency, and the evidence. A checklist that is only a list of account names does not tell you the close is done. I mark late items in the open, not after the meeting.

  4. Behavioral

    4. Tell me about an error you found in your own work.

    What they are testing: Ownership.

I reversed a duplicate accrual before the statements went out and I told my reviewer what happened. I added a search for that vendor so the duplicate would show next month. Hiding it until after issuance would have been worse.

  5. Technical

    5. How do you decide whether to accrue?

What they are testing: Accounting judgment.

I accrue when the goods or services were received and the amount can be estimated reasonably, even if the invoice is late. I document the basis. I do not accrue a round number with no support because the month looks low.

  6. Situational

    6. A manager asks you to move an expense into next month to help a target. What do you do?

    What they are testing: Integrity.

I explain the period the cost belongs to and I refuse the move if it misstates the month. I will show the impact honestly. I will not book it in the wrong period to make a target.

  7. Domain

    7. How do you review someone else’s reconciliation?

    What they are testing: Review.

I check the tie-out, the oldest reconciling item, and whether support matches the amount. I ask about anything old. A signature with no question is not a review.

  8. Behavioral

    8. Describe a control you improved.

What they are testing: Process improvement.

Invoices over a threshold were approved after payment. I moved the approval before payment and listed the exceptions. The next audit had a shorter finding because the evidence was in the workflow.

  9. Technical

    9. How do you treat a reconciling item that is six months old?

    What they are testing: Aging.

I find out why it is still open. If it is an error, I propose the entry. If it is a real timing item, I document why it remains. Age alone means it needs a human, not another month of silence.

  10. Domain

    10. How do you communicate a close delay?

    What they are testing: Communication.

I say which account, why, and the new time, as soon as I know. I do not wait until the calendar invite. Other teams plan on that clock.

Frequently asked questions

Will I be asked accounting standards by number?

Sometimes the idea, less often the paragraph number. Be ready to explain accrual, cutoff, and a reconciliation in plain language.

How do I talk about software?

Name the ledger you used and what you did in it. A tool tour is less useful than a break you cleared.

What if my experience is clerical rather than close?

Use the accuracy and the exception you caught. Say the scope honestly. A true smaller story beats a borrowed close story.

Can I practice the integrity scenario?

Yes. State the period the amount belongs in and refuse a misstatement. An accountant mock will press you with the target.
