Project Manager mock interview
Project manager interviews look for someone who can say what is off track while there is still time to act. A status report that is always green until the end date fails this loop.
Use one project with a date, a dependency, and a change you managed. Speak in decisions, not in tool names.
What the loop usually looks like

45 min
A slip, a scope fight, or a blocked dependency.
Stakeholders

10 project manager interview questions and model answers

1. How do you write a status that a sponsor can act on?
What they are testing: Communication.
I lead with the decision I need, the date it is due, and the consequence of waiting. The rest is what changed since last time. I do not bury a red item under a list of completed tasks.
Situational
2. A team says they are on track and you do not believe them. What do you do?
What they are testing: Evidence.
I ask what finished this week and what the next milestone demo will show. If there is no increment, the status is not green. I would rather correct it now than in the steering meeting.
Behavioral
3. Tell me about a scope change you refused.
What they are testing: Scope control.
A stakeholder added a second audience halfway through. I showed the date impact and asked them to choose. They kept the date and logged the new audience as a follow-up project. The original outcome shipped.

4. How do you surface a dependency you do not control?
What they are testing: Dependencies.
I name the owner, the date I need the input, and the fallback if it is late. I put it on the risk list before it is late. A dependency that appears the week it is due was already a miss.
Behavioral
5. Describe a project you would not call a success, and why you still learned from it.
What they are testing: Honesty.
We hit the date and missed the adoption we had named. I treated that as a miss in the retro, not as a win with an asterisk. The next charter had an adoption check before we called it done.
Situational
6. Two executives give you different priorities. What do you do?
What they are testing: Alignment.
I put both asks and the capacity on one page and ask them to rank. I do not split the team in secret to please both. If they will not rank, I escalate that fact, which is itself the status.

7. What belongs in a risk log versus a status aside?
What they are testing: Risk hygiene.
A risk has a likelihood, an impact, and an owner. A complaint with no next step does not. I review the top three every week and close the ones that are no longer real.
Behavioral
8. Tell me about a meeting you cancelled.
What they are testing: Respect for time.
A weekly steering review had no decision for a month. I replaced it with a short note and kept the meeting only when a decision was queued. Attendance on the real decisions went up.
Situational
9. A vendor slips and the launch is public. How do you replan?
What they are testing: Replanning.
I show the sponsor the new critical path and the pieces we can launch without the vendor. If the public date cannot move, I cut scope in writing. I do not promise the original date on hope.
Domain
10. How do you close a project so it does not linger?
What they are testing: Closure.
I check the outcome we named, hand over the runbook or the owner of the result, and stop the status meeting. Open bugs go to a named backlog with an owner, not to an endless project.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to cite a methodology?
Only if it changed a decision. Interviewers care more about a slip you reported early than about the name of the ceremony.
How is this different from a program manager interview?
Project questions stay on one delivery. Program questions ask how you coordinated several streams and a shared outcome. Use the posting to decide which stories lead.
What if I had no formal authority?
Say how you got a decision anyway: the page you wrote, the sponsor you asked, the trade-off you made visible. Influence without authority is a valid story.
Can I practice the bad-news update?
Yes. Say the decision you need in the first two sentences. A project manager mock will interrupt if you soften it for a full minute first.
